CLIMATE

The climate of the region varies with altitude. In and around Jammu city, the climate is similar to the nearby Punjab region with hot summers, rainy monsoon and mildly cold winters. While Jammu City itself does not experience any snowfall, the higher hills and mountains are snow-capped during the winter. People from all over India come to the Patnitop mountain resort to enjoy the winter snows. The shrine of Vaishno Devi is covered with snow in the winter.

PLACES TO VISIT IN JAMMU

Of all the places to visit in Jammu, the revered shrine of Vaishno Devi near Katra certainly stands at the top position. A visit to the shrine is experiential as well as equally sought after for religious experiences. Other than the temple, Jammu tourist places also count places as interesting as Amar Mahal Palace Museum and Mubarak Mandi Palace. Going for the travellers who like to get more of an experience rather than itineraries, there are many places to visit in Jammu that score high with their experiential value like a walk amidst the many treks there.

1.Harking back to the legends of Mahabharata, Mansar and Surinsar Lakes Jammu are linked with Arjun and his son, Babar Vahan. The myth suggests that Babar Vahan mistakenly killed his own father, and to bring him back to life, used the mani from Sheshnag (or the six-headed snake god), which he got from creating a surang (or a passageway) with his arrow.

2.Peer Kho Cave Temple is another famous temple in Jammu, which revolves around the epic of Ramayana. It is believed that Jamvant, the bear god, meditated in this cave. The temple is now dedicated to Lord Shiva, with a lingam inside the shrine as a mark of devotion to the main deity. On the banks of River Tawi, this one has a unique, ancient charm to it.

3.The town of Katra, which is close to Jammu, contains the Vaishno Devi shrine. Nestling on top of the Trikuta Hills at a height of 1700 m is the sacred cave shrine of Vaishno Devi, the mother goddess.

4.Bahu Fort is an ancient fort, believed to have been built by Raja Bahulochan about 3,000 years ago and later refurbished by kings of the Dogra Dynasty in 19 CE. The fort is believed to be one of the oldest standing buildings in Jammu with an interesting story behind it.

GULMARG: is well known for its amazing natural beauty and it is counted as one of the unique tourist destinations in the world. Gulmarg is surrounded by dense forest. This place is famous for its golf hikes and beautiful highland golf course. The natural beauty accompanied with clean fresh air and a beautiful environment highlights Gulmarg as a major tourist destination.

VAISHNO DEVI: The town of Katra, which is close to Jammu, contains the Vaishno Devi shrine. Nestling on top of the Trikuta Hills at a height of 1700 m is the sacred cave shrine of Vaishno Devi, the mother goddess. At a distance of 48 km from Jammu, the cave is 30 metres long and just 1.5 metres high. At the end of the cave are shrines dedicated to the three forms of the mother goddess — Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasarasvati, which is manifested as Vaishno Devi. Pilgrims start trekking to the cave temple, which is 13 km from Katra, enter in small groups through a narrow opening and walk through ice-cold waters to reach the shrines.

SONMARG:The way to reach Sonmarg or the Meadow of the gold is from the Sindh Valley. This valley also shows more amazing facet in Kashmir. Sonmarg is located at an altitude of around 2730 meters from the sea level; it has snow-covered mountains as its backdrop against the sky.

RAGHUNATH TEMPLE : is dedicated to the Hindu Lord Shri Rama. All the inner walls of this temple are covered with gold, on three sides. Galleries of this temples are covered with ‘ Saligrams’. The other surrounding temples are related to other gods from the Ramayana. This temple is located in the centre or we can say in the heart of Jammu.

BAHU FORT: was modified and improved by Dogra Rulers of Jammu but first it was built by the Raja Bahulochan. This fort is located at a distance of around 5 km from the main city and perhaps is the oldest edifice in the Jammu. This fort is facing the Tawi River. There is a temple of goddess kali in the fort.
